What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?

In regards to working with youth: “They don’t care what you know, until they know that you care” (paraphrased from Teddy Roosevelt). I started in youth development quite young, and it’s proven to be a great reminder over the years to be patient and persistent in building trust and relationship with students, and to meet them where they are, as best and as often as possible.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?

I ate a chapulín, or grasshopper seasoned with chile powder, while I studied abroad in Mexico. They are quite common in the city of Oaxaca, and there is a traveling festival that takes them and other regional favorites around the country. I would highly advocate for Oaxacan cheese over chapulines!

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

Although I know that it would be accompanied by some natural consequences, I would love to be able to read minds. No doubt it would be exhausting, but I love transparency and not having to wonder what’s going on in the minds of others.
